This pattern will be your new go to for dishcloth making. I love the texture of the waffle stitch; classy yet functional. It is a pattern that you can memorize quickly, and it is easy to make. The result is a beautiful dishcloth that will complement any kitchen.
It is a perfect pattern for gift giving too. Use it as a simple hostess gift or pair it with WAFFLE TEXTURE HANGING HAND TOWEL; add some other fun kitchen items to a pretty basket and you have the perfect housewarming gift.
For my markets I add a card stock wrap that adds a professional look. It indicates fibre content, washing instructions and a link to my website for the this free pattern.
My go to yarn for dishcloths is cotton worsted weight because it is absorbent and washes well. Cotton is a natural fiber that is durable and holds its shape relatively well.
Finished size of dishcloth is approximately 9” x 9”.

SPECIAL STITCHES:
Foundation double crochet (FDC):
This technique involves making a foundation row of stitches without using a chain. Chainless foundation stitches are an alternative to creating a chain to start a crochet project. This method creates a stitch and a chain at the same time, which is a great time saver, creates more even looking stitches and a nicer finished edge.
- Ch 2
- YO, insert the hook in the 2nd chain from hook, pull up a loop, (3 loops on hook)
- YO, draw through one loop. This makes the chain stitch. (3 loops on hook)
- YO, draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook)
- YO, draw through the last two loops. This completes one FDC.
- YO, insert the hook into chain stitch made in Step 3, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook)
- Repeat steps 3-5 to complete second FDC.
- Repeat steps 2-7 until you have the number of FDC you need to start your project.
Chainless Starting Double Crochet (CSDC)
Most of the time, when working with double crochets, we are told to chain three and turn at the end and use that chain three as your first double crochet. While that works, sometimes it can leave a gap at the beginning of the row, and that is not aesthetically pleasing. You can use this technique instead to create a more uniform edge with no gaps.
- Turn work so yarn tail is at the back of your project
- Stretch out the loop on your hook until it is the same height as a double crochet. Place index finger firmly on the end of stitch on the hook.
- Use the stretched-out loop to YO. Insert the hook into the first stitch of the row and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
- YO, draw through 2 loops on the hook (2 loops left on hook).
- YO, draw through the remaining 2 loops on the hook.
Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC)
Front post stitches are used to create textures in crochet like cables, ribbing and decorative raised patterns. They are worked around the post of the stitch from the previous row as opposed to the normal method of working through the top of the stitch.
- Identify the post of the indicated stitch and note the gaps on either side of it between stitches
- YO, insert the hook from the front of your work into the space before the post of the indicated stitch
- Work your hook behind the post of the stitch and then push the hook out through the gap on the other side of the post.
- YO, pull the yarn back the way you came and pull up a loop. (3 loops on hook)
- Double crochet as normal.
